2 High Noon 1952

4 Unforgiven 1992
5 Red River 1948
6 The Wild Bunch 1969
7 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969
8 McCabe and Mrs. Miller 1971
9 Stagecoach 1939
10 Cat Ballou 1965

AFI got this all wrong. Anybody that seen The Searchers knows that its sucks and its boring as hell. I agree with High Noon and Shane but Unforgiven really sucks its boring and in my opinion Clint Eastwood’s worst western. Never even seen most of these westerns but I know from the name that Cat Ballou sucks. With these boring westerns they nominated I’m extremely surprised that Dancing with Wolves isn’t on the list. What the hell happened to Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns like The Good, Bad and the Ugly which is the best western of all.

A man’s got to know his limitations.

  1. The Searchers is recognized because of its criticism and inclusion of a racist Wayne protagonist. The lack of a shot-reverse-shot for ‘look’ the classical Ford vistas and other self-criticising elements… that said it is more of a theoretically interesting film than an actual interesting film. first time i saw it i couldn’t wait until it was over and i could get to the toilet and go home!

  2. The Searchers movie is a character study. And is famous for influencing such films as Taxi Driver. But it doesn’t mean that its not boring as hell. The Good, Bad, and the Ugly was much more exciting movie and it wasn’t even listed.

  3. I’ve just realized why Sergio Leone’s westerns aren’t included. They are Italian films filmed in Spain so they might not be recognized if it is a ‘best american westerns’
