Thanks guys for your opinions. Memphis is a young franchise and Pau Gasol has done so much for them. He’s the franchises first all-star and has taken the team to its first playoffs. He’s the franchises best player ever this is why they should retire his number. He’s like the Magic Johnson for their franchise.
As for Michael Jordan’s jersey being retired by the Wizards nobody is currently wearing that jeresy. The fact that the great MJ wore that once is enough to retire it. I can agree with you on Steve Francis. But AI is a hall of fame player and I see his career similar in the terms of Charles Barkley. Who has his jersey retired by the Sixers and the Suns. You guys just think these players suck because they are currently playing. Remember these players are better than you think and in 10 years people will be talking about them like their legends. For example because MJ is older than Kobe. MJ will forever be better than Kobe because he’s older. Even if Kobe wins six championships MJ will forever be better.
Yes, its true that retired jerseys should be reserved for special players only. But its not all hall of famers its sometimes what that player did for its franchise. For exmaple (Jason Collier, Bobby Phils, Malik Sealy) weren’t hall of famers and got their jerseys retired for dying young. Had they continued playing their jerseys would have never been retired. Avery Johnson for example is not a hall of fame player. Jeff Honrnacek isn’t either. Don Nelson wasn’t either.
I can’t believe that you guys would complain about Pau Gasol? So are you guys telling me that Vince Carter shouldn’t retire his jersey in Toronto? After all, what did Vince do that Pau didn’t?

Derek, Zydrunas Ilgauskas do you know how many years he’s been on the Cavs? Antoine Walker’s been on the celtics for a long time too. I can agree with you on Steve Francis and Antonie Walker but you can’t argue that they did have their own eras in terms of being the star on their respective team for many years. Bruce Bowen helped the Spurs win 3 championships. If you say that then why did they retire Jeff Hornacek’s jersey in Utah? Did he win one championship? Latrell Sprewell lead the Knicks as an #8 seed in the NBA finals. I’m actually suprised you guys aren’t complaining about the Washington Wizards (Caron Butler, Jamison) or Suns (Marion).

Players should only get their jerseys retired for a few reasons:
They spent nearly their entire career there.
They were a centerpiece to a championship team, or a major factor for multiple championships (this is where I see Bowen).
Special circumstances, such as an early and tragic death.
Why would Celtics fans want Antoine Walker? He didn’t do anything special for them, they went deep into the playoffs once, and that was really Pierce carrying the team. I do believe Pierce deserves his numbers in the rafters BTW.
